G host stories tap into something ancient and primal. Like most people, I have a cold, soft spot for them. Unwisely, David sold the liver to the local butcher in order to buy sweets. No spoilers in case Hollywood comes knocking, but Gramps turns out to be not as dead and gone as David reckoned. This I posted in clusters of tweets, timed to coincide with British commuter hours, over several weeks prior to publication of The Bone Clocks. I like to think The Right Sort was well received: for sure, it was a lot of fun to do, but the narrative raised more questions than it answered, especially about the mysterious house and its owners.
It chronicles the rise of a fictional British band called Utopia Avenue, in the era of flower power and free love. A uniquely egalitarian band, they split the singing, songwriting, instrumental duties and royalties equally. The plot, turning like a record, meanders and doubles back on itself as certain scenes crop up again in different chapters like leitmotifs varying from character to character. His characters and settings are as lush and finely crafted as Rembrandt paintings. The paragraphs flow seamlessly, simultaneously delicious with detail but addictively readable. The amount of detail is just right, enough to be immersive but not so much that one loses the empathetic tether with the finely drawn characters. Mitchell also takes enjoyable pitstops where cultural icons pop up for cameos, like heroes in a Marvel film.

David Mitchell murdered Robert Hind while on licence from an earlier life sentence for killing his then girlfriend. A man who served almost 23 years in prison for killing his former lover is expected to die behind bars after murdering a sex offender. But the year-old double killer, of Cowlersley, was given a whole life tariff for the brutal murder of Robert Hind, reports the Huddersfield Examiner. Mitchell strangled and then cut up the body of homosexual Mr Hind while on licence from an earlier life sentence for killing his then girlfriend.
